Happy 2018 – Day 216 – The Guest House: Acceptance and Gratitude

Yep – I’m cheating today. I’m posting someone else’s poem. Not only that, but it’s very likely you’ll have heard or read this before. I don’t feel guilty though, because this poem is well-known for a reason, and it’s something that really, many of us would benefit from reading each and every day.

This poem represents to me that no matter what happens today; no matter what emotions, thoughts and feelings you experience inside of you; or what events, positive or negative, occur around you; you can meet them all with acceptance and appreciation.

The Guest House by Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
