I’ve said before that I’m a caffeine addict. I know that it makes my anxiety worse; I know I need to quit; but the lava java junkie inside will literally route through a wheelie bin to get the next fix.
As such, I’m really working at at least reducing my intake. I’ve switched to machine pods and I’m drinking a lot less, and noticing my energy levels more.
Yesterday, I was starting to ponder how much I needed another coffee in the midst of some serious household chores.
As I tidied, I thought I may as well put some music on.
Now… I haven’t even seen The Greatest Showman yet (I’ve heard good things), but somehow I ended up listening to ‘This is Me’, Keala Settle’s song from the movie.
And.
Wow!
I mean, it’s cheesy as hell – luckily this appeals to my inner Disney/Musical fangirl – but it really packs a punch!
Before I knew it, I was singing along, dancing, fist-pumping.
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me!Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me!
What I noticed was that at the end of this song, I felt as if I’d had ten cups of coffee. I was full of enthusiasm and energy. I felt alive!
Before you reach for whatever stimulant you think is going to keep you awake, try playing an upbeat song and see if you’re still as tired at the end of it. At best, you won’t need it. At worst, you’ll have enjoyed yourself for a few minutes.
Plus, if you’re tone deaf like me, it’s a great way to get rid of people nearby and enjoy some alone time.
