I know we’re three days into January, and this might mess with your OCD, but I found this calendar in my junk mail (imagine the horror!) and it’s just too good not to share. It’s a happiness calendar with daily actions for each day in January, created by ‘Action for Happiness.’ Download your copy here!
Though the theme of the calendar is happiness, a key aspect of this is kindness – towards others, and towards yourself.
When you’re struggling with your mental health and you feel like the world is against you, you’re also often under the impression that it revolves around you. You can find yourself over-analysing every tiny social interaction: every glance, wave, walk, word… Every gesture or tone is another sign that you’re being judged unworthy.
Having more of a common sense approach these days, I now realise that everyone is far too busy with their own stuff to be constantly thinking about me. I’ve also found that kindness towards others is a great way of a) forcing yourself to focus on someone/something else; b) feeling good about yourself and; c) making someone else feel good.
Although I’ve often been told that I’m very kind and thoughtful, naturally I am very selfish. I wish I was a better person – that I could just do good things for the sake of doing them – but alas, I’m not. The great thing is that whatever your motivation, if your actions are kind and good, then you’ll make other people’s lives better regardless. No one needs to know that you’re actually a selfish cow underneath!
I highly recommend having a look around the Action for Happiness website. You’ll find plenty of free resources and interesting reads.
