I don’t know about you, but my diet has always been directly affected by my frame of mind. If I’m positive and motivated, I’m eating wholesome, balanced meals. If I’m feeling angry, worried, sad… then you’ll find me reaching for the donuts.
“Eat like you love yourself,” is a phrase I read or heard somewhere a long time ago, and it has always stuck with me. It’s a great motto when you’re in a good place. Unfortunately, sometimes you’re in a bad place and feeling like you perhaps don’t love yourself, or care what happens to you so you may as well eat the cookies and the cake and the family-sized bag of crisps… When you’re on a one-way track to self-sabotage, these words just don’t cut it.
What I have found over the years is that you can force this attitude – this self-care routine – at breakfast time – when you haven’t yet picked up the momentum to either hate or give up on yourself. Over the last few years, my go-to breakfast has been any combination of almond butter and avocado on crackers, wholewheat bread or as pictured here, Christmas crumpets! Sometimes I’ll mix in some scrambled egg/omelette and spinach/kale too. It depends on how hungry I am. The stars of the show are definitely the avocado and almond butter (I will alternate nut butters too.) It’s such a rich, creamy, luxurious combination – I have to stop myself eating it again for lunch!
This is a super tasty and healthy way to begin the day and you can’t help but gain positive momentum just from knowing that you’ve fed your brain, body and mood from the get-go. So not only does it improve your morning, but it might also help you to make better choices when you’re hungry later in the day.
I should also mention that I’m much slimmer, healthier and happier eating this high-fat breaky than I ever was in the old days, when I’d start the morning with a coffee or low-fat low-taste cereal bar because I couldn’t possibly afford the calories! It really is win win!
