Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of the United States, provides today’s quote:
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
I love this quote. I’ve used it many times in school, when the irritating actions and provocation of one student to another causes upset and drama.
I love this quote because it gives power back to the victim.
It reminds us that even when someone’s behaviour towards us is hideously and unjustly grotesque, we still have a choice. We can choose to become upset, angry, irritated… or we can choose to ignore it. We can choose to smile at the person who said it. We can choose to laugh. We can choose to feel sorry for them – people who get their kicks by pulling others down are often the most unhappy people, with the darkest insecurities.
